✨self-care for the soul ✨

Hey There!
Finding yourself is not really how it works. You aren’t a ten-dollar bill in last winter’s coat pocket. You are also not lost. Your true self is right here, buried under cultural conditioning, other people’s opinions and inaccurate conclusions you drew as a kid that became your beliefs about who you are. 'Finding yourself' is actually returning to yourself. An unlearning, an excavation, a remembering who you were before the world got its hands on you" -Emily McDowell

Why Working with Friends Can (Sometimes) End Friendships

In May 2018, my Korean pop-culture news site Kurrent News was launched. Over the years in college, I've always envisioned being a small business owner especially once I developed a strong love for writing. It grew even stronger once I started my career over at Seoulwave, another Korean pop-culture news site. I was writing about things I loved, which happened to be music and covering events for NYFW and concerts. I developed a variety of skills from photography to interviewing techniques. I even developed a few friendships throughout my time working in the company.

Once Seoulwave was hacked in 2017, the staff and I parted ways from the company. I was completely devastated. All of our hard work was in vain.  Most of us became angry and as time went on, we all agreed to create a joint news site. But of course, the timing just wasn't of the essence. Everyone including myself was either a full-time intern, went to school, or worked a part-time job.

Fast forwarding to the summer of 2018, my friend (at the time) and I decided to create Kurrent News. Not only was she Seoulwave's former editor, but she also had loads of writing experience. It was a least that's what I thought. As time went on with mapping out the details from web designs to actual writing content, I became super aggravated. It was as if I was working on a school's group project and doing all of the work. Once I started speaking up, constant excuses were made. From implying that I changed passwords to constant nitpicking. It was driving me insane. Not only was it a toxic work environment but it also strained our friendship.

There is a lot of things that I know now, that I wish I knew prior to creating Kurrent News, which is- balance. Balance is extremely important because as I mentioned earlier, I did the majority of work. When creating business projects, you must always keep in mind what kind of partner you need to help you balance out your company.

Here are a few things you should consider:

  • Trust: If there's no trust, there is certainly paranoia. It's already stressful starting a business, imagine being stressed out, even more, knowing that you can't even trust your partner.

  • Communication: If there is no communication, there is mishap. If there is something you do not like, talk it out respectively. Not only is it professional, but it'll also help establish that bond that you need to run a successful business.

  • Respect: Don't step on each other's toes. At the end of the day, you are a team. Talk/treat your partner the same way you want them to talk/treat you.

  • Teamwork: If there's no team, there's no work. Plan out things (niche, content, etc) together. It's better to be inclusive than exclusive.

Certainly, there are more elements that should be added to this list but I believe these four are quite essential to running a successful business. Good luck with your future endeavors!
